This is a great value player offering the desirable 1080p upsampling. In layman's terms, 1080p upsampling means that you can watch conventional DVDs in near High Definition quality - just add a TV that's HD Ready with an HDMI! Whilst the picture quality isn't quite as good as HD-DVD or Blu-ray, it's closer than you might imagine, and there's the benefit of not having to ditch your entire DVD collection!

1080p and HDMI aside, the Philips DVP5980 is still a superbly specified DVD player. For a sound quality that matches the impressive picture, Philips have fitted a 192 kHz/24 bit audio DAC.

Other top facilities on the DVP5980 include the ability to playback DivX discs, with the further enhancement of Ultra Certification. Ultra Certification gives your DivX discs all the benefits of conventional DVDs such as subtitles, menus and track information. Just when you think it can't get any better, it does! With its USB port you can connect a USB device into the DVP5980 and playback digital music and images, directly through your TV.
